What is a CNR number?

The Case Number Record (CNR) is the unique identifier eCourts gives every case registered in a court that uses the Case Information System. Older case numbers like “O.S. 1/2024” repeat across courts; the CNR doesn’t, because it encodes where and when the case was filed. Once issued, it stays with the case through every hearing, order and transfer.

How a CNR number is structured

CharactersPartExample (MHPU010012342024)
1–2State code (letters)MH — Maharashtra
3–4District / court code (letters)PU — the district
5–6Court establishment (digits)01 — the court complex
7–12Case filing serial (digits)001234 — case no. 1234
13–16Year of filing (digits)2024

High Court CNRs follow the same pattern; the district letters are often HC, as in DLHC01… for the Delhi High Court.

How to find your case’s CNR number

  • On court-issued papers — orders and daily cause-list entries usually carry it.
  • On the eCourts portal — search the case by case number, party name, advocate name or FIR number; the CNR appears on the case status page.
  • From your advocate — every case they track on eCourts has one.

How to check case status with a CNR number

  1. Open services.ecourts.gov.in (district and subordinate courts) or hcservices.ecourts.gov.in (High Courts).
  2. Choose CNR Number search.
  3. Enter the 16 characters without spaces or hyphens, fill the captcha and search.
  4. You’ll see the parties, stage, next hearing date, case history and orders.

Repeating this for every case, every day, is where most of an advocate’s evening goes. Our complete eCourts guide covers searching without a CNR, the mobile app and downloading orders.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CNR number?

CNR stands for Case Number Record. It is a unique 16-character code that eCourts assigns to every case when it is registered in a court using the Case Information System. It stays the same for the life of the case, so it identifies the case across all courts in India.

How is a CNR number structured?

Two letters for the state, two letters for the district (or court), two digits for the court establishment, six digits for the case filing serial number, and four digits for the year of filing. For example, MHPU010012342024 reads as MH · PU · 01 · 001234 · 2024.

Where do I find the CNR number of my case?

It is printed on the case papers issued by the court (often on the first page of orders and the cause-list entry), and shown on the case status page in eCourts when you search by case number, party name or advocate name.

How do I check case status using the CNR number?

Open the official eCourts services portal (services.ecourts.gov.in for district courts or hcservices.ecourts.gov.in for High Courts), choose CNR Number, enter the 16 characters and the captcha, and submit. The eCourts Services mobile app offers the same search.

Does this tool fetch live case status?

No — this decoder only checks the format and explains the parts, entirely in your browser. To fetch parties, hearing dates and history automatically and get reminders, add the CNR to JusticeTrack.
